The UK Construction Industry Will Need 250,000 Extra Construction Workers By 2028…

 

According to a recent report by CITB’s Construction Skills Network, it’s estimated that the equivalent of 251,500 construction workers will be needed by 2028… Below are the key findings from the report…

 

• The UK construction industry rose by two percent in 2023, which is the third consecutive year of growth 

• Forecasts show a growth of at least 2.4% per year between now and 2028 

• To meet this growth, an equivalent of more than 251,500 extra construction workers are needed over the next five years, with construction employment rising to 2.75 million by 2028 

 

After a few rough economic years for the UK and with the country recently coming out of a recession the 2.8% growth in the construction industry for the next 4 years is extremely positive. The report also states that there will be major opportunities in private housing, infrastructure and repair and maintenance. The future looks bright for the construction image.

 

Although there is definitely a reason to feel optimistic about the future, recruitment will play a huge factor in the continued growth of the construction industry. According to Builders Merchants News “In 2023 the industry welcomed 200,000 new workers it saw the loss of 210,000 due to older workers retiring and not being replaced”. However, CITB has invested £267 million to help improve diversity, quality, and productivity in a bid to welcome more workers into the construction industry.
